Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated the surgical outcomes of our experience with minimal open reduction of tripod fractures of the zygoma with or without single microplate fixation.

Materials and Methods: Twenty five patients with unilateral, non-comminuted tripod fractures of the zygoma treated at Chungbuk National University Hospital between August 2009 and February 2011 were enrolled in this study. Minimal open reductions have been performed for the tripod fractures. Quality of reduction and cosmetic outcomes were assessed by postoperative images, clinical assessment and photography.

Results: In all 25 cases, the operations were performed immediately after the diagnosis of the tripod fracture. The reductions were all successful with short operative time and less postoperative swelling. The follow-up CT scan revealed no displacement of the bone fragment. Postoperative complications included temporary hypoesthesia of the cheek in 4 cases.

Conclusion: In case of simple, non comminuted tripod fracture of the zygoma, if the surgery is conducted immediately after diagnosis, the reduction can be performed successfully without wide dissection and subsequent multiple internal fixation.
